How to Start Up While Still Employed
May 5th, 2012 by Farai

A good hedge against the risks of starting your own business is to start up while you still have a job that pays a regular salary and benefits. If you’re in a position to do that, you’ll have the best of both worlds. There are some simple Do’s and Don’ts that can guide you as you walk a sometimes fine line between your career and entrepreneurship.

1. Consider running your business as a part-time operation alongside your current job. This is a great model because you’ll continue to have income and benefits.

2. You need to understand and follow your employment contract to the letter, especially if it makes reference to inventions and intellectual property (IP) that you develop as part of your job. Almost always, anything developed on company time and using company property belongs to the company. If you do not have an employment contract, you’re still not in the clear. Check the company’s Employee Manual for references to ownership of inventions and IP. No manual? Ask your Human Resources manager or someone functioning in that role to explain the policy. How to garner courage to start your own business
Mar 13th, 2012 by Farai

If you subscribe to the inspiring articles on this website, chances are you are a member of the millennial generation.  I myself am one of them and I must admit it took me some time to get comfortable with the notion of quitting my job, going without a paycheck and risking it all for the dream of starting my own venture, on my own terms.

At a recent entrepreneurial pitch competition it was said that ‘Once you meet one entrepreneur, you meet one entrepreneur’.  Not all entrepreneurs are alike and you will find that they all look at the world through a different lens.  Here is my story.

I was working at a large IT consulting firm during the day while doing my graduate work at night.  I found myself looking for that next move in my life, the one that would lead to that next great challenge and in my case it lead me to start Bookend Technology, an E-Learning company that creates web and mobile products to help students better manage and measure their educational achievement.   Read the rest of this entry »

When is the right time to quit paid employment?
Feb 27th, 2012 by Farai

Quitting your job to start your own business is one of the scariest decisions you can ever make. It is a difficult decision because you will be moving from certainty of a monthly pay cheque to the unknown world of entrepreneurship devoid of a regular monthly pay cheque. The scary part of all this is that you are giving up the known for the unknown, giving up stability and schedule for something that isnt guaranteed.

Entrepreneurs are often motivated to start businesses for three reasons: income opportunity; sense of purpose or fulfillment; and to be their own boss. by leaving your paid employment you are giving up limitations for unlimited possibilities, and a strict schedule for complete flexibility…

This is more-so as you will now determine how you want to run your life without any restrictions whatsoever. The greatest joy in life comes when you are able to do things you are passionate about, and ensuring you are contributing your quota to the economic well being of your country. Procrastination is the thief of time
May 29th, 2011 by Farai

In psychology, procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority, and thus putting off important tasks to a later date or time.

The word ‘procrastination’ is very common in our character. Most of us have been a victim of this phenomenon which i can say is a way of life among most of us. I personally procrastinate and then have to suffer myself to meet tight deadlines. I always cuddle into my comfort zone thinking there is enough time to complete the task.

Many of us have been working on brilliant business ideas for a long time, but have not had the guts to bring them to fruition due to one reason or the other. The psychological causes of procrastination vary greatly, but generally surround issues of anxiety, low sense of self-worth, and a self-defeating mentality. This often leads to further procrastination as the resultant effect can propel you into an abyss of self pity.

Remeber, procratination is the thief of time. ACT today and follow your dreams. Dont wait for tomorrow, for tomorrow may never come. Make hay while the sun shines.

God Bless you !!!

Stop Procrastinating
Mar 18th, 2011 by Farai

Procrastination is indeed a thief of time, lost time is never found. Great women and men died with great ideas that could have changed the world. Just imagine if people like Bill Gates had not started Microsoft, you can imagine what the world could have been.

I love a quote by Mignon McLaughlin, which says ‘ the time to begin most things is ten years ago’. We are now three month into the year, are you on course with your goals for 2011. Have you started working on those cherished dreams? or you are you still planning? How many months do you need to plan? Are you going to plan forever? Napoleone Hill said, ‘procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday’.

Are you planning to start your own business this year? or may be you are thinking of building a mansion for your family? Or you are you planning to embark on that MBA program you have been postponing all these years?. Whatever you are yearning to do, you need to get started today, for tomorrow may never come. You need to live each day as if its your last day on earth. There is never the right time to do anything, so take action now and live your dreams.
